Rund Partnership was appointed as Designer and Contract Administrator for Portsmouth City Teaching Primary Care Trust to manage ongoing maintenance works at St James’ Hospital.
St James’ Hospital is a Grade II Listed building and opened in 1879 as an asylum. The building required a substantial number of repairs, alongside a sympathetic refurbishment programme to preserve its rich history.
Our team used their significant expertise and experience from working on multiple historic building projects to undertake a detailed survey of the existing building. We then specified and administered the works under a Government Works Contract, detailing principal façade repairs and restoration.
Part of the works involved converting an old boiler house into a medical loan store. The store would allow various medical products, such as walking frames and other assistance products, to be distributed to patients for temporary use. We oversaw the careful removal of existing oil storage tanks, ensuring all works were carried out safely and efficiently.
An industrial therapy unit was also built on site, designed to help patients with learning difficulties and allow them a space in which to learn new skills.
Additional refurbishment works included bath stone repairs and replacement, roof repairs, chimney reconstruction, repairs to timber sash windows, and brickwork repointing. The clock tower on site also underwent external refurbishment.
